Thrombocytopenia (TCP) is the second most common hematological change during pregnancy and is considered as a major source of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Despite its effects to morbidity and mortality, it is frequently ignored or disregarded, particularly in resource-limited nations. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of thrombocytopenia and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized University Hospital, Eastern Ethiopia from June 20 to August 30, 2022. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 199 pregnant women selected through a systematic sampling technique. Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Review Committee of Haramaya University. Data related to sociodemographic and reproductive variables were collected using structured questionnaires. Four milliliters of venous blood were collected from each study participant and a complete blood cell count was determined using UniCel DxH 800 hematology analyzer. Logistic regression analysis was done to assess the association between TCP and independent variables and P < .05 was considered statistically significant. In this study, the prevalence of TCP was 14.1% (95% CI: 9.6-19.7). Of them, 10 (35.7%), 12 (42.9%), and 4 (21.4%) had mild, moderate, and severe TCP, respectively. Having more than 3 children (adjusted odds ratio, AOR = 7.90, 95% CI: 2.60, 24.3), no antenatal care follow-up (AOR = 7.90, 95% CI: 2.40-26.2), being in the second and third trimester (AOR = 6.90, 95% CI: 1.70, 28.9 and AOR = 5.04, 95% CI: 1.12, 22.7, respectively), and history of heavy menstrual bleeding (AOR = 4.03, 95% CI: 1.25, 13.1) were significantly associated with TCP. TCP is a public health problem among pregnant women in the study area. Having more than 3 children, lack of antenatal care follow-up, being in the second and third trimesters, and having history of heavy menstrual bleeding was significantly associated with TCP. As a result, regular platelet count monitoring and appropriate intervention approaches based on identified predictors should be explored to mitigate adverse outcomes in pregnant women.

Background: Anemia is one of the most common comorbidities frequently seen in admitted patients. However, there is a scarcity of evidence regarding anemia among hospital admitted patients in Ethiopia, particularly in the Harari Region. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anemia among hospital admitted patients in Eastern Ethiopia. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from October 25 to December 30, 2022. Four milliliters of venous blood were collected and complete blood count was done using the DxH 800 (Beckman Coulter, Inc, Miami, FL) hematology analyzer. The data were entered in Epi-data version 4 and exported to SPSS version 26 for statistical analysis. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression models were fitted. The level of significance was declared at a p-value of < 0.05. Results: Of the 381 hospital admitted patients, 64.8% (95% CI = 60.01, 69.65) of the participants were anemic. Admitted patients who drank standard alcohol daily (AOR = 3.78, 95% CI = 1.71, 8.30), underweight (AOR = 9.39, 95% CI = 2.90, 30.46), and undernourished patients (AOR = 2.59, 95% CI = 1.15, 5.84), patients admitted with chronic kidney disease (AOR = 11.16, 95% CI = 4.06, 30.64), chronic liver disease (AOR = 3.20, 95% CI = 1.21, 8.47), deep vein thrombosis (AOR = 6.22, 95% CI = 1.98, 19.52), infectious disease (AOR = 9.71, 95% CI = 2.77, 34.02), and chronic non-communicable disease (AOR = 7.01, 95% CI = 1.90, 25.99) were all significantly associated with anemia. Conclusion: Anemia was common among hospital admitted patients and should prompt the focus on admission diagnoses that are likely to play leading roles in etiology. This information indicates a need for routine screening of anemia for all admitted patients to improve their health.

BACKGROUND: Thrombocytopenia is defined as a decreased number of platelets in the circulating blood as a result of hypo-proliferation in marrow or peripheral destruction of platelets. Several diagnostic methods have been proposed to discriminate the underline cause of thrombocytopenia. Recent studies showed that mean platelet volume (MPV) could be used for differential diagnosis of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Thus, we aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of MPV for differential diagnosis of ITP from hypo-productive thrombocytopenia. METHODS: This study was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines (PRISMA). The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO with the reference number CRD42023447789. Relevant published studies that were published up to April 10, 2023, in peer-reviewed journals were searched on electronic different databases. The methodological quality of the included studies was appraised using the quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies 2 (QADAS-2) tool. The pooled weight mean difference (WMD) of MPV between the ITP group and hypo-productive group was analyzed using a random-effects model meta-analysis. Relevant data were extracted using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using STATA 11.0 and Meta-disc 1.4 software. Publication bias was evaluated using Deek's funnel plot asymmetry test. RESULTS: A total of 14 articles were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The comparison of MPV between groups revealed that the pooled mean value of MPV increased significantly in ITP patients compared to patients with hypo-productive thrombocytopenia (WMD = 2.03; 95% CI, 1.38-2.69). The pooled sensitivity and specificity of MPV in differentiating ITP from hypo-productive thrombocytopenia were 76.0% (95% CI: 71.0%, 80.0%) and 79.0% (95% CI: 75.0%, 83.0%), respectively. The summary positive likelihood ratio (PLR) and negative likelihood ratio (NLR)using the random effects model were 3.89 (95% CI: 2.49, 6.10) and 0.29 (95% CI: 0.18, 0.46), respectively. CONCLUSION: MPV can be used to discriminate ITP from hypo-productive thrombocytopenia. It can possess large advantages as it is noninvasive, simple, quick, inexpensive, easy to perform, reliable, and routinely generated by automated cell counters.

Background: Anemia is a common and often overlooked hematological change observed in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, there is no global survey or health registry that estimates the pooled prevalence of anemia in patients with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the global pooled prevalence of anemia among adult patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: This study was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO with the reference number (CRD42022327135), and the link provided (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?ID=CRD42022327135) display the published methodology. Previously published articles were searched in PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, WHO Global Index Medicus, African Journals Online, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Google from October 26 to November 09, 2022. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tool. Random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of anemia. The degree of heterogeneity among the included studies was assessed using I2 statistics. Publication bias was detected using funnel plot symmetry analysis supplemented by Egger's and Begg's tests. Results: Twenty-four studies with a total number of 19,118 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of anemia among type 2 diabetic adult patients was 27.0% (95% CI: 24.0, 31.0, I2 = 96.45%; P< 0.001). Geographical and time-based subgroup analysis showed that higher prevalence of anemia was observed in Africa region 28.0% (95% CI: 17.0, 39.0) and from 2015 to 2022, 28.0% (95% CI: 24.0, 33.0), respectively. Conclusion: Anemia is a moderate public health problem among adult patients with type 2 diabetes. Nearly one in four patients with type 2 diabetes develops anemia. Therefore, considering the negative impact of anemia, it is important to include anemia screening in the routine assessment of diabetes-related complications.

Background: Hematological abnormalities are a common complication of malaria infection. However, there is a paucity of evidence regarding it among malaria-infected adult patients in association with the ABO blood group in Ethiopia, particularly in the Harari Region. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the hematological abnormalities among malaria-infected adult patients in association with ABO blood groups at Jinella Health Center, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July 10, 2022, to January 10, 2023. Four milliliters of venous blood were collected from each study participant. Drops of blood were used for blood film preparation. ABO blood group was determined by agglutination test using monoclonal anti-sera (Agape Diagnostics Ltd., India). A complete blood count was done using the DxH 800 (Beckman Coulter, Inc, Miami, FL) hematology analyzer. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 26. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression models were fitted. The level of significance was declared at a p-value of <0.05. Results: The study revealed that 47.2% (95% CI: 41.0 53.6) of the participants were anemic. Being female (AOR = 3.18, 95% CI = 1.67, 6.04), having the A blood group (AOR = 2.75, CI = 1.20, 6.31), and being infected with P. falciparum (AOR = 2.64, CI = 1.26, 5.53) were all significantly associated with malaria anemia. The overall prevalence of thrombocytopenia was also 67.7% (95% CI: 61.7-73.4%). It was significantly associated with P. falciparum infection (AOR = 8.03, CI = 3.53, 18.25) and high parasitemia levels (AOR = 4.40, CI = 1.57, 12.32). Conclusion: Patients with malaria who belonged to the "A" blood group in the study area had anemia as a serious health problem. Hence, frequently checking for anemia in patients with malaria who have blood group "A" can help with early detection and better management of anemia.

BACKGROUND: Folate deficiency (FD) can cause adverse health outcomes of public health significance. Although FD is a significant micronutrient deficiency in Ethiopia, concrete evidence is limited. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was designed to estimate the pooled prevalence of FD among women of reproductive age (WRA). METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed using MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Google Scholar, African Journals Online (AJOL), The Vitamin and Mineral Nutrition Information System (VMNIS) of the World Health Organization (WHO), Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx), and institutional repositories of major universities and research centers. Additionally, we scanned the reference lists of relevant articles. Two authors independently selected the studies, extracted the data, and the study risk of bias. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. We used a random-effects model to estimate the pooled mean serum/plasma folate and the pooled prevalence of FD. Begg's and Egger's tests were used to check publication bias. RESULTS: Ten studies-nine cross-sectional and one case-control-with a total of 5,623 WRA were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Four (WRA = 1,619) and eight (WRA = 5,196) cross-sectional studies were used to estimate the pooled mean serum/plasma folate and prevalence of FD, respectively. The pooled mean serum/plasma folate concentration estimate was 7.14 ng/ml (95% CI: 5.73, 8.54), and the pooled prevalence of FD was estimated to be 20.80% (95% CI: 11.29, 32.27). In addition the meta-regression analysis showed that the sampling technique was significantly associated with mean serum/plasma folate concentration. CONCLUSIONS: FD is a significant public health issue among WRA in Ethiopia. Therefore, the public health strategies of the country should focus on promoting the consumption of folate-rich foods, strengthening the coverage of folic acid supplementation and its adherence, and swift translation of the mandatory folic acid fortification into action. Background: Suicide is a major public health issue across the globe. It is the second leading cause of death in adolescents. Even though the rate of suicide has increased, no study has been conducted to investigate the determinants of suicide in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the magnitude of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and its associated factors among secondary school students in the Harari regional state of Eastern Ethiopia. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected 1,666 secondary school students. A structured-self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. The WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was used to assess suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. The Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS) was also used to assess depression, anxiety, and stress. Data were entered into EpiData version 3.1 and exported to Stata version 14.0 for the analysis. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between the outcome and independent variables and the statistical significance was declared at a p-value of < 0.05. Result: The overall magnitude of suicidal ideation and attempts was 13.82% at 95% confidence interval (CI): 12.16-15.66 and 7.61% at 95% CI: 6.37-9.07, respectively. Suicidal ideations and suicide attempts were significantly associated with undergoing depressive symptoms (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.08-2.19 and AOR: 2.37; 95% CI: 1.46-3.86, respectively), experiencing anxiety symptoms (AOR: 1.80; 95% CI: 1.25-2.59 and AOR: 1.89; 95% CI: 2.14-10.65, respectively), being exposed to sexual violence (AOR: 3.36; 95% CI: 1.65-6.84), and having a family history of suicidal attempts (AOR: 2.12; 95% CI: 1.21-3.69 and AOR: 4.74; 95% CI: 2.14-10.65, respectively), whereas living in a rural residence (AOR: 1.65 95%, CI: 1.08-2.55) was significantly associated only with suicide attempts. Conclusion and recommendations: Nearly one in six secondary school students had both suicidal ideation and attempted to take their own life. Suicide is one of the psychiatric emergencies that need immediate action. Therefore, the concerned body from either a governmental or a non-governmental organization should work in setting strategies to minimize sexual violence as well as depressive and anxiety symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Anemia in school children is a worldwide public health problem, affecting about a quarter of this population. It also remains a significant problem in developing countries, with multifactorial causes. Anemia in school children has adverse effects on the development of the physical, cognitive, immunity of affected children, and subsequently their educational achievement which may lead to loss of productivity at a later age in life. Regular surveillance that could provide evidence-based local data is required to intervene in the problems. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of anemia among school children in primary schools of eastern Ethiopia. METHODS: School-based cross-sectional study was conducted by recruiting 482 school- children. Data on socio-demographic and dietary habits were collected from parents/legal guardians. Capillary blood for blood film preparation and hemoglobin measurement and stool sample for the diagnosis of intestinal parasites infection was collected. Hemoglobin concentration was measured using a hemoglobinometer HemoCue® 301+, and stool examination by direct wet mount and concentration technique. Data were entered into epi-data and exported into SPSS for analysis. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was run to identify associated factors. Association was described using adjusted OR (AOR) along with 95% CI and variables with a p-value<0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of anemia was 24.5%. Being female (AOR = 2.88, 95% CI: 1.69, 4.92), family size of more than 5 (AOR = 2.78, 95% CI: 1.60, 4.81), not consuming green leafy vegetables (AOR = 4.09, 95% CI: 2.42, 6.94), consumption of milk (AOR = 2.22, 95% CI: 1.27, 3.88), being stunting (AOR = 3.17, 95% CI: 1.70, 5.91) and parasite infections (AOR = 5.23, 95% CI: 2.77, 9.85) were significantly associated with anemia. CONCLUSION: In this study nearly one-fourth of children were anemic. Anemia was a moderate public health problem among schoolchildren in the study area. Thus, school-based interventions targeting nutritional factors and intestinal parasite infection need to be implemented.

Background: Malaria is a major public health problem with the highest morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Hematological changes play a great role in malaria pathogenesis through platelets and platelet parameters. However, the changes in platelet parameters are not clearly described in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to compare platelet parameters and their correlation with parasitemia among malaria-infected adult patients and healthy adults. Methods: An institutional-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 186 (93 malaria-infected patients and 93 healthy adults) study participants using a convenient sampling technique at Jinella health center, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia, from July 10-August 10, 2022. Five milliliters of venous blood were collected from each study participant, and platelet parameters were analyzed using a Unicel (DxH 800) automated hematologic analyzer. A drop of blood was taken from malaria-suspected patients for blood film preparation. Results between two groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationships between two continuous variables. A P-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Platelet, plateletcrit, and mean platelet volume of malaria-infected patients were significantly lower as compared with healthy adults (103 x103cells/µL vs 268 x103cells/µL, 0.13 fl vs 0.23 fl, and 9.6 fl vs 15.3 fl), respectively). Conversely, platelet distribution width and platelet large cell ratio were higher in malaria-infected patients than healthy adults (19.2% vs 15.3% and 0.35% vs 0.29%), respectively). Parasitemia levels had a moderately inverse correlation with platelet count (r= -0.419) and a weakly positive correlation with mean platelet volume (r=0.278). Conclusion: The platelet, plateletcrit, and mean platelet volume of malaria-infected patients were significantly lower as compared with healthy adults. Malaria parasitemia had a moderate inverse correlation with platelet count and a weak positive correlation with mean platelet volume. Thrombocytopenia and alteration of platelet parameters should be considered in malaria patients.

Background: Diabetes has been proposed to inflict an insult on the hematopoietic milieu marked by changes in hematological indices including red blood cell parameters. Thus, this study aimed to assess the red blood cell parameters and their correlation with glycemic control in type 2 diabetic adult patients in comparison with apparently healthy individuals. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at the chronic illness clinic of Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized University Hospital from May 20 to July 10, 2022. A total of 220 (110 type 2 diabetic patients and 110 controls) study participants were selected by a simple random sampling technique. Five milliliters of venous blood were collected by the vacutainer blood collection technique. Red blood cell parameters and blood glucose levels were determined using UniCel DxH 800 and Biosystems A25 analyzers, respectively. Independent sample t-test and Pearson correlation test were used for the data analysis. P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Statistically significant difference was observed in RBC parameters of T2DM patients and the control group. The mean RBC count, Hgb, Hct (P < 0.001), and MCHC (P = 0.002) in patients with type 2 diabetes was significantly lower than in the control group. However, the mean of RDW was significantly increased in type 2 diabetic patient groups than in the control group (P < 0.001). The mean RBC count, Hct, and Hgb in patients with good glycemic control were significantly higher than the patients with poor glycemic control. Besides, a statistically significant negative correlation was observed between glycemic control and RBC count, Hgb, and Hct level in diabetic patients. Conclusion: In this study, a statistically significant difference was observed in red blood cell parameters of type 2 diabetic patients compared to the control group. A significant negative correlation was noted between glycemic control and RBC parameters in type 2 diabetic patients. Therefore, evaluation of RBC parameters should be considered for better management of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of the change in size of red blood cells and it is used in combination with other hematological parameters for the differential diagnosis of anemias. Recent evidence suggested that the change in RDW level may be a predictive biomarker of morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death globally as compared to cancer and communicable diseases. Early diagnosis and prompt intervention of these diseases are very important to minimize their complications. Nowadays, the diagnosis of most cardiovascular diseases majorly depends on clinical judgment, electrocardiography and biochemical parameters. Red blood cell distribution width as a new predictive biomarker may play a pivotal role in assessing the severity and progression of CVDs. However, the underlying mechanisms for the association between RDW and CVDs are not clear. A deeper understanding of their association could help the physicians in more careful identification, early prevention, intervention, and treatment to prevent adverse cardiovascular events. This review aims to elaborate on the recent knowledge on the association between RDW and cardiovascular diseases and some possible pathophysiological mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: In Ethiopia, more than four million children are anticipated to live under particularly difficult circumstances. Street children are subject to violence, a lack of health care, and a lack of education. Which denies them the right to live in a secure environment and exposes them to different health problems. Currently, little is known about the prevalence of Streetism, including health conditions. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess the health status of street children and determinants of Streetism. METHODS: Mixed methods (sequential) were employed from February 1 to 28, 2021. Quantitative cross-sectional study design and phenomenological qualitative designs were applied. Overall, 220 street children were involved in the study. The most common reason that forced the children to resort to a street way of life is to look for a job and quarreled with parents. The data were collected using interviews methods. Chi-square test and multiple binary logistic regression were applied to examine the variations among variables with the health status of street children. Qualitative data were analyzed using the thematic analysis technique. RESULTS: The study included a total of 220 street children. As to the quantitative study, the majority of study participants (92.73%) drank alcohol regularly. Depression (39.22%) and peer pressure (43.14%) were the most common initiation causes of drinking alcohol. According to a qualitative study report, "Street children are mostly affected by the communicable disease" and… They are addicted to substances like benzene" which had a profound effect on their health." Furthermore, the study discovered a statistically significant association between respondents' health status and sociodemographic characteristics (age and educational status), job presence, and drug use. CONCLUSION: This study identified the factors that drove street children to live on the streets, such as the inability to find work and disagreements with their parents. The majority of the street children were affected by preventable and treatable diseases. Unfortunately, almost all street children reported drinking alcohol, which exposed them to a variety of health problems. In general, the study discovered that street children require immediate attention. Decision-makers and academicians should collaborate to develop a plan for these children's health and social interventions.

BACKGROUND: Infections of sterile body fluids are susceptible to serious invasive bacterial infections and critical, with high morbidity and sequelae risk. This study has not been conducted previously in eastern Ethiopia. OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to determine the bacterial profile, associated factors, and their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents of isolates among patients with sterile body fluids at Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia. METHODS: Hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to June 2021 among 204 patients selected using a convenient sampling technique. Data were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire. All consenting patients submitting body fluid specimens for testing at the clinical laboratory were included and analyzed using standard microbiology methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using the disk diffusion method and interpreted as per Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Data were double entered into Epi data version 4.6, exported, and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science version 25. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regressions were used to assess the association between outcome and predictor variables. P-value <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of bacteria among different sterile body fluid samples was 16.7% (95% CI: 12-22%). Most of the bacterial isolates (70.6%) were Gram-negative bacteria, mainly K. pneumoniae (26.5%) and E. coli (20.6%). Multidrug resistance was identified in 76.5% of the isolates. Being inpatient (AOR = 3.59; 95% CI: 1.52, 8.51) and turbid appearance (AOR = 4.35; 95% CI: 1.67, 11.29) were significantly associated with culture growth rate. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of bacterial isolates in this study comprises about 17%. Gram-negative bacteria, particularly K. pneumoniae and E. coli, were the major etiologic agents. Being inpatient and the turbid appearance of the specimen were significantly associated with the culture-positive result. Significant numbers of multidrug-resistant bacteria were isolated, mainly against beta-lactams. Therefore, culture and susceptibility testing should be an integral part of the laboratory investigation.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 brought significant challenges to public health. It changed the view of global health and safety, trust in the healthcare system, and clients' willingness to seek healthcare. To contain the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and its detrimental effects, understanding peoples' health behavior, especially healthcare-seeking, and determining the community risk perception is very important. Thus, this study aimed to determine the health-seeking behavior, community's risk perception to COVID-19 pandemics, and factors influencing the community risk perception in Harari regional state, Ethiopia. METHODS: Community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from 5 to 30 February 2021. A total of 1320 adult (>18 years) participants were selected using systematic random sampling. The data were collected using an online kobo collect toolbox and analyzed using descriptive statistical tests. Chi-square test and multiple binary logistic regression were applied to examine the difference between variables. A p-value < 0.05 was considered to be of statistical significance. RESULTS: The study included 1296 respondents >18 years old. The overall prevalence of willingness to seek healthcare in the study area was 35.6% (95% CI: 33%-38.3.0%). The mean cumulative score of risk perception was 30.5 (SD ± 7.25) with the minimum and maximum score of 13 and 63, respectively. A total of 656 (50.6%) of the participants had low-risk perceptions concerning COVID-19. The study found a statistically significant association between risk perception and sociodemographic characteristics (age, educational status, and income), and knowledge of the respondents. CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of willingness to seek healthcare was 35.6%. Healthcare intervention aimed to contain the COVID-19 pandemic should consider the factors associated with the study area. Similarly, the study found a low-risk perception among the community that needs critical action to manage the COVID-19 pandemic and to protect the community as a whole. Thus, it is necessary to improve community risk perception through health education.

BACKGROUND: Hematological changes are the most common complications occurred in malaria pathology. Anemia, thrombocytopenia, and mild-to-moderate atypical lymphocytosis are the main hematological changes occurred in malaria infection. Therefore, this study aimed to compare hematological profiles of malaria-infected adult patients in the Raya Alamata Hospital, Northeast Ethiopia from February 1, 2019, to April 30, 2019. METHODS: The hospital-based comparative cross-sectional study was done to compare the hematological profiles of a total of 238 study participants, consisting of 119 malaria-infected patients as cases and 119 malaria negatives as controls. Malaria diagnosis was done by thick and thin blood film microscopy. We determined the hematological parameters using an automated DiRUi BCC/3000B hematology analyzer. Data for the different hematological parameters were expressed as mean (± SD). A binary logistic regression model was constructed for categorical dependent variables to see the associations with predictors. RESULTS: In this study, the mean values of red blood cell count, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, platelet count, and eosinophil count were significantly lower in the cases than the controls. The prevalence of anemia and thrombocytopenia in malaria patients were 39.5% and 56.3%, respectively. Being female, and having high malaria parasitemia were found significantly associated with thrombocytopenia. The odds of developing thrombocytopenia was 8.4-fold higher in malaria patients with high malaria parasitemia. CONCLUSIONS: Anemia and thrombocytopenia were the common hematological abnormalities observed in malaria patients. Therefore, malaria patients should be assessed for the presence of such hematological abnormalities and need to be managed timely.
